ABSTRACT
The approach to the profile of inmates in Brazilian prisons and the importance of resocialization is an extremely
relevant topic for understanding the challenges and needs of the prison system in our country. The prisoner's
profile in relation to crime can vary according to several factors, such as motivation, type of crime committed,
psychological profile, criminal history, among others. There are several theories that try to explain what causes
crime, but none of them are able to explain the origin of all crimes, as each crime has its own cause and specific
context. Prisoners in Brazil have social characteristics that make them vulnerable, such as having low education
or not having access to quality education, being unemployed, being poor, being involved with drugs, not having
decent housing conditions, and having a history of family violence, creates a cycle of social exclusion that favors
crime and, as a consequence, prison. The profile of inmates in Brazilian prisons is a reflection of a flawed and
unequal system. Criminal recidivism is high in Brazil, pointing to the need to offer support and opportunities so
that inmates can reintegrate into society in a dignified manner. Resocialization appears as a necessary alternative
to guarantee their effective reintegration into society.
