ABSTRACT
The proposed topic of this paper aims to study the regime progression in custodial sentences in the Brazilian prison system and its (in)effectiveness regarding the rehabilitation of inmates. This article aims to analyze the effectiveness of regime progression in order to observe if it is effective in penal rehabilitation. Therefore, it is necessary to provide brief accounts of the origin and evolution of punishment, and then delve into the penitentiary systems to verify which system is adopted by our legal framework. Finally, a discussion on the real effectiveness of punishment and its progression is necessary, as this study is of utmost importance considering the crisis in the prison system that has plagued us in recent times. Therefore, a bibliographic research was conducted, considering books by various authors and scientific articles published on the internet, which sought to bring discussions about the topic.
